technical and paint-related reasons

My relaxing weekend continues: I go to Polly's latest private view, this time at a gallery in a private house in Earl's Court, and of course it's very pleasant to see P & B again. The new paintings are blue, which must be less stressful than the yellow (although apparantly not necessarily, for technical and paint-related reasons) and are portraits of chairs, some of which I know well enough to recognise. Which is odd, since I probably wouldn't be able to do that with portraits of people.

I decide to go to the pictures - there's a cinema in the area showing Belleville Rendezvous, but I don't find it, so go home, change out of the slightly ludicrous version of "neat" I have chosen to wear and find another place it's on. I'm tempted to double-bill it with Spirited Away, but chicken out at the last minute.

Belleville Rendezvous is wonderful. I can't really explain it right now, perhaps ever, but look out reviews by more articulate people than me. Better yet, look out the film itself. It's particularly nice to see something so deliberately influenced by Tati (in the same way that in The Fifth Element, Besson took Moëbius as his model).
