I might as well have fun
Christian goes off to Hamburg to work for a week first thing. After breakfast I clean all the dishes that have come over from his flat and the Harrey Road flat (Christian has insisted that his be cleaned by hand, with respect, Mariana, as technogirl, prefers them to go into the Siemens-Craft dishwasher. So everyone is happy). Then I sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
After that I go to the supermarket and get some basic provisions. However I can't find any baskets (or any trolleys either for that matter) so I can only buy as much as I can carry in my arms. An interesting strategy on the part of the supermarket, I think.
Around this point I realise that as the people at home all think I'm on holiday I might as well have fun, so I wander into the middle of town and get some goodies (dried cranberries, "Exotic Mix", chocolate-covered coffee beans and pistachios to go in the meal), some DV tapes for the camera I brought with me and some blank CDs. This is where I find out about the curious status of credit cards in Germany, but a quick visit to the cashpoint later and it's all sorted out. I also get some ice cream.
Returning home I make some rice (with mushrooms and pistachios) and when Mariana gets home we eat it. Then we get a call to say that The Director and Juan are coming round. This they do and we drink tea and chat and the Director inspects the house. After he leaves, we put up a wire shower curtain rail in the downstairs (Boys') bathroom, but this is judged to be a failure: M will get something better tomorrow.
